In July 2024, the Labour Government announced changes to the Winter Fuel Allowance, restricting eligibility to those over State Pension age who also receive a qualifying means-tested benefit. The move put millions of pensioners at risk of losing vital support with energy bills.
Estimates suggested up to 10 million pensioners across the UK were potentially affected, including 17,140 in Solihull West & Shirley. Each stood to lose up to £300 towards their heating costs.
Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst MP joined efforts to oppose the change and stand up for older residents in his constituency. He backed a cross-party campaign led by the Daily Express, urging the Chancellor to reverse the cuts. He launched a local survey in September 2024 to gather residents’ views and raised their concerns in Parliament. On Winter Fuel Action Day, he delivered leaflets, hosted a street stall and petition in Shirley, and shared information online to help residents access alternative support.
Neil also voted consistently against the policy in Parliament.
In June 2025, following sustained pressure, the Government announced that the Winter Fuel Allowance would be reinstated for all pensioners with incomes below £35,000. While the U-turn was welcomed, it came too late for thousands who went without support in winter 2024 to 2025.
In Parliament, Neil highlighted that the reversal had been driven by political pressure rather than principle. He continues to campaign for dependable, long-term support for pensioners.
