Today in the Chamber, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley, pressed the Secretary of State for Business and Trade on what measures will be put in place to protect jobs in the automotive sector. This was in response to the announcement of 25% tariffs on automobiles and automotive components, by the President of the United States on Wednesday 2nd April.
The introduction of these tariffs brings about significant risks to the UK car manufacturing industry. The Institute for Public Policy Research’s (IPPR) report has highlighted around 25,000 direct jobs in the UK car manufacturing sector could be at risk if the tariffs lead to a decline in exports to America.
In the Solihull West & Shirley constituency, many constituents are employed by JLR in Solihull or Aston Martin in Gaydon. The local MP, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, will be meeting with representatives of JLR on Friday 4th April to discuss the ramifications of these tariffs on their business and what support they will need from the Government.
