Today in the Chamber Dr. Neil Shastri-Hurst MP challenged the Foreign Secretary on his decision to back plans for a significantly expanded embassy for the People's Republic of China at the former Royal Mint site, near the Tower of London. This will establish the largest diplomatic base for China globally and will dwarf their existing embassy in Marylebone by a factor of ten.
The proposal has generated debate and apprehension not least due to its potential ramifications for national security and the broader geopolitical dynamics relations between the United Kingdom and China. This approach by the Government goes against warnings from the police, intelligence services, and our allies.
Green lighting the embassy upgrade will send a dangerous signal to our Western allies that the current U.K. Government is willing to sacrifice its national security in exchange for short term financial benefit.
In Parliament, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley, has been an advocate for British security, both domestic and abroad, and he has consistently challenged the Government on its diplomatic strategies with China.
During Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs questions on Tuesday 1st April, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, continued his scrutiny of the Foreign Secretary’s decisions.
