Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley and a former NHS surgeon, visited the local Cancer Research UK shop in Solihull, on Tuesday 26th August, to meet with volunteers and staff whose dedication is driving the fight against cancer.
The visit provided an opportunity for Dr Shastri-Hurst to engage directly with those on the frontline of Cancer Research UK’s vital fundraising work. In 2023/24 alone, volunteers across the charity’s network of shops donated over 2.5 million hours of their time, raising £28 million to support pioneering, life-saving research.
Speaking after the visit, Dr Shastri-Hurst said:
“Cancer affects so many families here in Solihull and Shirley, as well as up and down the country. The commitment of the volunteers in Cancer Research UK shops not only raises vital funds but also embodies the very best of community spirit. It was a privilege to meet them, hear their stories, and learn more about the incredible work they make possible.”
During his time at the shop, Dr Shastri-Hurst toured the premises, met volunteers and the shop manager, and discussed the ongoing efforts to beat cancer through research, awareness, and support.
