Today, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley, has expressed serious concerns about the potential consequences of the Government’s proposed Employment Rights Bill for local businesses and jobs.
Dr Shastri-Hurst has warned that the Bill could significantly increase the cost of employment, by an estimated £150 per worker per year, at a time when many small and medium-sized enterprises are already under pressure. He also highlighted concerns that the legislation could grant trade unions wide-reaching new powers, potentially increasing strike action by up to 35% and imposing an additional £5 billion in costs on British businesses annually.
He has launched a local campaign to raise awareness of the Bill’s implications and to ensure that the voices of Solihull West & Shirley’s business community are heard in Westminster.
The Bill comes alongside other recent tax increases affecting business, including a rise in National Insurance Contributions, which independent estimates suggest could lead to 50,000 more people out of work nationwide, and a 140% increase in business rates.
Dr Shastri-Hurst is encouraging business owners across Solihull West & Shirley to join his campaign and complete his local business survey to ensure their views are reflected in Parliament.
Commenting, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst MP said:
“I speak to businesses across Solihull West & Shirley every week, and a clear message is coming through – they are facing mounting costs and growing uncertainty.
“The Government’s proposed Employment Rights Bill risks making things even harder, at a time when we should be doing everything we can to support jobs, investment and growth. I’m particularly concerned about the potential for increased strike disruption and the added burdens this Bill could place on employers.
“That’s why I’ve launched this campaign: to stand up for local businesses, to keep our high streets thriving, and to protect jobs in our community. I encourage business owners to take part in my survey and make their voices heard.”
