Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley, has called on the Government to uphold its promise to Hong Kongers who have come to the UK under the British Nationals (Overseas) (BNO) visa scheme.
Speaking in Westminster Hall yesterday during a debate on BNOs and Indefinite Leave to Remain, Dr Shastri-Hurst highlighted the deep roots the Hong Kong community is establishing in Solihull. He stressed that changing the conditions of their status partway through would betray their trust and damage the social contract between the state and those who have chosen to make Britain their home.
In his intervention, Dr Shastri-Hurst said:
“Like the hon. Gentleman, I have a significant Hongkonger population in my constituency of Solihull West and Shirley, there are about 4,500 across the borough. Does he agree that they had a legitimate expectation that the rules of the game would not be changed partway through, and that to do so would damage the social contract that we, as a state, have with these people?”
Following the debate, Dr Shastri-Hurst reaffirmed his commitment to the Hong Kongers of Solihull:
“The Hong Kong community has brought enterprise, energy, and optimism to our borough. They came here on the clear understanding that the UK would provide stability, security, and a fair pathway to permanence. I will continue to stand up for them both in Parliament and locally, ensuring that the promises made to them are honoured in full.”
Since being elected, Dr Shastri-Hurst has been at the forefront of championing Hong Kongers in Solihull, engaging directly with community groups, raising their concerns with Ministers, and campaigning for policies that support their successful integration and long-term security.
