Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West and Shirley, has visited the Blue Cross in Solihull to see the vital work the charity is doing to support local pet owners, promote animal welfare, and strengthen community safety.
Blue Cross provides a lifeline for families struggling with the rising cost of veterinary treatment. Through its Veterinary Care Fund, the charity can offer up to £300 towards treatment costs for pets whose owners are unable to afford routine or unexpected vet bills. Support is available where the prognosis is good, treatment will preserve a quality of life, and surgery is anticipated to be curative. Applications are made quickly via veterinary practices, ensuring help reaches pets who need it most.
Dr Shastri-Hurst said:
“It was inspiring to see the dedication of the Blue Cross team here in Solihull. Pets are valued family members, and no-one should have to face the heartbreak of being unable to care for them due to cost. The Veterinary Care Fund is a compassionate and practical scheme that makes a real difference to households across our community.”
Blue Cross also highlighted the importance of responsible dog ownership, including support for community safety and preventing dog-related incidents. The charity’s Responsible Dog Ownership Course (RDOC) has proven effective in improving behaviour and reducing reoffending, and Blue Cross is calling for greater investment to expand this nationally.
Dr Shastri-Hurst added:
“I will continue to work with Blue Cross and local partners to ensure responsible dog ownership, better animal welfare standards, and support for pet owners in need. Solihull is fortunate to have such committed advocates for animal welfare at the heart of our community.”
