Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, Member of Parliament for Solihull West & Shirley, visited Solihull School this week to speak with Upper Sixth students as part of the school’s Academic Enrichment Programme.
During his talk, Dr Shastri-Hurst shared insights from his varied career, spanning medicine, law, and politics, and spoke about the importance of democracy and encouraging active democratic engagement among young people. He reflected on the responsibilities that come with public service and the need to foster a culture of informed, thoughtful participation in civic life.
Following his speech, Dr Shastri-Hurst took questions from the students, who asked a range of intelligent and searching questions on topics including political decision-making, healthcare policy, and the future of representative democracy.
Speaking after the visit, Dr Shastri-Hurst MP said:
"It was a real pleasure to meet the students at Solihull School and to see their enthusiasm for politics and public life. Their questions were thought-provoking and showed a strong understanding of the issues facing our country today. It's vital that we continue to engage young people in conversations about democracy and empower them to be active participants in shaping our shared future."
Solihull School’s Academic Enrichment Programme aims to broaden students’ horizons beyond the curriculum by inviting speakers from a wide range of fields to share their experiences and perspectives.
