Solihull West & Shirley MP, Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst, visited Widney Junior School last Friday morning, where he delivered an assembly to pupils on British values and the importance of democracy.
Addressing students across year groups three to six, Neil spoke about the fundamental principles that underpin British society, democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. He explained how Parliament works, the role of an MP, and why every citizen’s voice matters. Pupils were encouraged to ask questions and consider how they can make a positive contribution to their school and the wider community.
Following the assembly, Neil was given a tour of the school’s impressive facilities. Particular highlights included the vibrant and well-equipped playground, which features a dedicated bus library to promote reading, outdoor gym equipment, and multiple table tennis tables to encourage active and social play.
He also observed Year 4 pupils taking part in the school’s annual pancake race, a lively and good-spirited event that showcased both teamwork and enthusiasm.
During discussions with school leaders, Neil spoke about the Government’s proposed social media ban for under-16s and the importance of safeguarding young people online. Conversations also covered the school’s future plans and its continued commitment to delivering high standards of education.
Neil praised the school’s strong emphasis on reading, noting the creative initiatives in place to encourage pupils to develop a lifelong love of books.
Commenting after his visit, Neil said:
“I was incredibly impressed by the facilities at Widney Junior School and the wide range of extra-curricular activities available to pupils. From the bus library promoting reading, to the outdoor gym equipment and table tennis tables encouraging active play, it is clear that the school is committed to supporting both academic achievement and personal development.
The enthusiasm of the students, not least during the pancake race, was wonderful to see. Schools like Widney Junior are doing vital work in nurturing confident, capable young students who understand the importance of democracy and community.”
Neil thanked the headteacher, staff, and pupils for their warm welcome and looks forward to continuing to support schools across the constituency.
