Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst MP has responded to recent remarks by China’s ambassador urging Britain to “honour its commitments” on Taiwan. Dr Shastri-Hurst highlighted the irony of these comments, noting that Beijing itself has broken solemn international promises - most notably the Sino-British Joint Declaration on Hong Kong.
He emphasised that many Hongkongers have since sought refuge in the United Kingdom, including in Solihull West & Shirley, where they have become valued members of the community. Their experiences, he said, serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of standing firm in defence of liberty and democratic values.
Dr Shastri-Hurst’s full comments appear in his letter to the editor published in The Sunday Telegraph yesterday.
