I do not support the Government’s plan to introduce mandatory digital ID cards for workers. Whilst tackling illegal immigration is vital, this measure is a misguided response that risks undermining the freedoms the British people rightly cherish.
Good government is not about grand schemes but about respecting the complex fabric of our society. This policy does the opposite; extending state control over everyday life without addressing the real problem. Those working illegally are already outside the system; a digital ID will not bring them into it. The black market will simply adapt.
Rather than burdening law-abiding citizens and employers with more bureaucracy, efforts should focus on smarter enforcement, stronger border management, and cracking down on exploitation. We must never sacrifice our liberal traditions in pursuit of policies that are merely symbolic rather than effective.
