I am aware of the planned demonstrations in Solihull this weekend, including one outside the George Hotel. Peaceful protest is a democratic right, but it must always be exercised responsibly and within the law. Any behaviour that tips into intimidation, harassment, or disorder has no place in our community.
I know there are strong feelings on all sides of the asylum debate. The continued use of hotels to house asylum seekers is a symptom of a broken system. The Government must restore control to our borders, speed up the processing of asylum claims, and end the costly and unsuitable use of hotels. That is the real solution to the frustrations many people feel.
However, change will not come through confrontation in the streets. It will come through leadership, competence, and decisions taken in the proper democratic way. I urge everyone to avoid engaging with misinformation or rumour online, and to seek information from trusted sources.
The safety and peace of Solihull must come first. I am in close contact with West Midlands Police, Solihull Council, and community leaders to ensure order is maintained and that everyone can go about their lives free from fear or intimidation.
